On 27 Aug 2026, two volunteer collectives gathered at AUDA Garden to read — Anne Frank, Malala, Bhagat Singh, Nehru. At 6 PM, men with lathis who identified as Bajrang Dal attacked. The readers did not retaliate. This page is the archive they tried to tear.

After the attack, false narratives spread — “anti-nationals,” “terrorists.” The reading had been advertised openly as free thought: books by noted scholars, thinkers, activists. Journalists were present. This record corrects that lie with names, times, and testimony.

Chronicle — 27 August
Four to six. How silence was surrounded.
AUDA Garden, Vastrapur
Near DEO Office. Public park. The circle was on the ground — books laid open, readers sitting. No stage, no mic.

Reading begins — silently
Participants sit and read books they brought. SYCA’s posters and messages had been clear: free thought, peaceful, volunteer-led, no political affiliation.

Organisers notice a group with hockey sticks at the garden gate. No disruption yet — just presence. A warning no one wanted to name.

As readers wrap up, the group approaches — orange flags and scarfs, chanting ‘Jai Shree Ram’ unprovoked. They question intent, fixate on Malala’s book.
De-escalation refused
Volunteers show Bhagat Singh and Nehru to prove intent. Jay Thakkar invites them to sit and talk. They refuse, keep screaming, push readers to a corner.
Sensing escalation, Jay suggests singing the National Anthem. Readers comply, then chant Bharat Mata Ki Jai as is norm.
The pretext — then beating
Accuse Jay of “disrespecting” the anthem (shoulder moved), accuse another of not chanting — then beat them. Simultaneously tear books, including Bhagat Singh.
Mob tries to lynch readers — heavy lathis, batsBeaten even in front of police — then taken to station
Readers dragged to different points, slapped, punched, scratched. Beaten again before the police van. Police tell victims: “we do not know with these people, they can even kill you.” Victims put in van to Vastrapur station. No attacker taken.
What they tried to tear
Not just bodies — ideas. Malala for daring to be read. Bhagat Singh — torn even as volunteers held him up as proof of patriotism. The contradiction is the point.

Posters, WhatsApp, socials — all said the same thing: gather and read books that believe in free thought. That transparency is why the attack’s claim of “anti-national gathering” collapses on contact.

What the state did
Broad daylight. In front of police. No attacker detained.
At the garden
- Attack happened in presence of police officers, passers-by, journalists.
- Mob beat readers “even in front of police” and “before stopping at the police van.”
- One officer was himself hit on the hand by a lathi aimed at Shashi Kumar.
At the station
- Readers taken in — put into police vans, taken to Vastrapur station.
- Attackers not taken — press statement: “no person who attacked those present was brought to the police station.”
- FIR filed by injured participants vs. Bajrang Dal members. Videos submitted as evidence.
- Three attackers released on bail — statement calls this “disheartening.”
Outside, attackers spread claim that “anti-nationals and terrorists had ganged up inside the park. They needed to be taught a lesson.” The reading was silent, with no banners or slogans — and watched by four newsrooms.

“The youth and broader civil society will not be silenced by this violence.” The statement condemns the unprovoked lynching attempt and the tearing of Bhagat Singh’s books, and demands police act — not as bystanders, but as enforcers of the right to read and gather peacefully.
